Our Story
What is now a thriving community apothecary began as a humble class project…
Jan was finishing her second year of clinical herbalist training at Sacred Plant Traditions here in Charlottesville, and had a final project requirement to graduate.
She liked the idea of creating a community kitchen, but wasn’t sure how to connect it to an herbal medicine practice.
One day, her teacher Kat Maier exclaimed, “This community needs an herbal apothecary!”
Boom! Jan liked that idea.
An apothecary AND a kitchen to make herbal goodies! What could be more perfect?
(Cue the clouds opening, harps playing, and forest fairies dancing all around)
Jan had no experience running an apothecary, so naturally the project seemed daunting at first.
Enter Heather Wetzel, one of her teachers at the time and manager of the apothecary at Sacred Plant Traditions. Jan asked Heather if she’d be interested in helping her out with this venture–and Heather agreed!
Just like that, the seed that eventually became The Elderberry was planted.
For 9 years, Jan and Heather joyously co-created and experimented running an herbal storefront.
They are thankful the community welcomed them with open arms from the very beginning– and for everyone who continues to inspire and support The Elderberry’s success.
Heather recently re-located to pursue her growing consultation practice, while Jan continues to co-create the magic with the talented, smart, and creative Sydney Batson along with the rest of the incredible Elderberry staff – Meg Madden, Amanda Wagstaff, and Natalie Rader.
So here we are. Nine years out from that little inkling of a “class project.”
Still just as in love with the plants as we’ve ever been.
And over the moon that we get to share that love with you.
